FRENCH LANGUAGE BOOK. Despite a fairly rapid dissolution of their Abteilungen of assault guns, these armoured vehicles are far from disappearing from the composition of the two divisions: they will then equip the 7th and 8th companies with SS-Panzer-Regimenter 9 and 10 – and this, almost until 'at the end of the conflict –. These StuGs. 40 distinguished themselves against Soviet armoured vehicles in Galicia in April 1944, and with as much brilliance the following summer on the Invasions front, where they were first engaged against the British salient launched southwest of Caen at the end of June 1944. Alongside the Panzer IV, later the Panther of the SS-Pz.Rgt.9 and also the Tiger of the s.SS-Pz.Abt. 102, assault guns will not be unworthy for ratings 112 and 113, earning scores sometimes higher than those of battle tanks. From the fall of 1944, the 9. and 10. SS-Pz.Div. will fight separately until the end of the conflict, the assault guns continuing to fight fiercely in the Ardennes and in Hungary for the “Hohenstaufen”, and in Alsace or even in Pomerania for the “Frundsberg”.
The author has sought to publish as many unpublished photos as possible, with precise biographies of the main officers linked to the assault guns: Rolf Tammling, former Sturmartillerist of Das Reich – close comrade of “Teddy” Telkamp –, Rudolf Rettberg, Magnus Flor, Bernhard Bauer, Otto Meyer, Otto Paetsch, Willi Stock, Walter Bestmann and Alfred Alius.
