FRENCH LANGUAGE BOOK: This book is dedicated to the 40 first-class submarines built for the French Navy between 1922 and 1939. They are divided into two types: the 1,100-ton or Requin class submarines from the 1922 and 1923 programs, and the Redoutable and Pascal class submarines from the 1924 to 1930 programs. Second-class submarines and minelayers are covered in another book in the same series. The 1,500-ton submarines are better known than the 1,100-ton submarines, which are often overlooked. The departure from Toulon on November 27, 1942, of the Casabianca, the Glorieux, and, notably, an 1,100-ton submarine, the Marsouin, is considered a major event in the history of French submarines. The 1,500-ton submarines were the most active vessels in the Navy during World War II. The campaigns of several are relatively famous, with the Casabianca taking pride of place, its most spectacular missions recounted by two former commanders. Eleven submarines were lost in action, nine of them at the hands of our former and future allies. The five survivors were engaged in operations in the Mediterranean from December 1942 (the Casabianca) or served in listening schools. Much of the historical account, particularly for the period from June 1940 to December 1942, is limited to a simple narration of events; commentary and interpretation are practically excluded in a work that prioritizes technical details.
