AUTHOR SIGNED COPY - Established during the latter part of the First World War, then afterwards the build-up of the aerodrome during the 1920 and 1930 which saw advances in technology and aircraft. The Second World War period forms the largest section covering the five years of war, when the aerodrome played significant roles during Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain and when the squadrons took the fight back across the Channel against the Nazis and finally brought freedom to an occupied Europe. Images of pilots and ground personnel show the dedication, spirit and sacrifice of those who served their country during its hardest times. Post-war saw the arrival of the jet age and also the RAF Aircrew Selection Centre based there. Annual air shows became the norm during the 1950 and still continue today. A civil airport was established during the 1960s and remains a vital hub for visitors and business into London.
