FRENCH LANGUAGE BOOK; Air Force helicopters first appeared in 1950 to meet operational needs during the conflicts in Indochina and Algeria, where their aircrews and mechanics wrote their first chapters of glory. Redeployed to mainland France in the early 1960s, they were also stationed in overseas territories and deployed on overseas operations in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. After supporting ground forces in the Far East and North Africa, their crews dedicated themselves fully to supporting Air Force units, while also responding to requests from civil authorities in both mainland France and overseas territories. From the mid-1960s onwards, the aircraft were organized into wings, squadrons, and flights, carrying out a wide range of daily missions including transport, support, airspace policing, fire support, and assistance. Fourteen different aircraft types, from the Hiller 360 to the Caracal, and the Sikorsky H-19 to the Fennec have borne the Air Force roundel across skies worldwide, operated by men and women whose motto, Fight and Save, remains more relevant than ever.
