FRENCH Language Book: The development of what was officially called the "High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle" (HUMWV) began in 1979 when 61 manufacturers received a specification sheet outlining the requirements for the future vehicle. AM General, one of only three firms to submit proposals, was awarded a production contract in March 1983. The first production model of what became known as the Humvee rolled off the assembly line in January 1985, launching the first series of a range that would eventually include up to 16 variants. A powerful V8 engine and innovative transmissions gave it extraordinary off-road capability combined with the ability to reach very high speeds on paved surfaces. Although never considered an armoured fighting vehicle, the Humvee spawned factory variants with "basic armour" or "additional armour," but faced with the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) common in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Humvee's glaring weaknesses triggered an over-armour program. Additional armour meant more weight, and more weight meant more stress on the chassis and running gear, which ultimately spelled the end for the vehicle. In 2011, the US government announced that the Humvee would be replaced by an all-new JLTV (Joint Light Tactical Vehicle). Humvee production, at least for the US Army, eventually exceeded 280,000 vehicles. This book, which describes the Humvee in detail, recounts its development history, places the vehicle in its historical and military context, and highlights its key characteristics. For prospective owners, it deals with the problems of acquiring, restoring and implementing the Humvee and addresses the thorny issue of price.
