FRENCH Language Book: Despite its frequent association with the American company Willys-Overland, the Jeep was actually designed by a team working for American Bantam, in response to a request from the US Quartermaster Corps in 1940. Faced with the machinations of strong political opposition, Bantam lost the contract to Willys-Overland and Ford, who ultimately produced approximately 640,000 units of what remains arguably the world's most famous vehicle, while Hotchkiss produced an additional 28,000 Jeeps in France well after the war. During World War II, the Jeep served all the Allied armies. Partially submersible Jeeps landed on D-Day in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. In the extreme conditions of the Russian front, they proved their effectiveness and earned the admiration of the Red Army. After the war, thousands of Jeeps were allocated to the armies of the newly liberated European countries. Others have been "civilized," becoming true collector's items. In the 1970s, restored Jeeps appeared in numerous films, helping to highlight the importance of the Jeep's historical role in the Allied victory.
