FRENCH LANGUAGE Book. At the end of 1946, the "Brevet militaire de parachute" insignia was created. Before this date, no single insignia attesting to this qualification was worn in the French army. During the hostilities and in the immediate post-war period, the vagaries of training French paratroopers outside mainland France generated a wide variety of insignia indicating membership in elite troops or special services. This book presents this variety of French and foreign badges and insignia with strong paratrooper symbolism, evoking the circumstances surrounding the creation of the first airborne units in France, Great Britain, and French North Africa, and the training of parachute personnel at British and American jump centres in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Drawing on the best sources on the history of French military parachuting, drawing on public and private museums and the experience of seasoned collectors, the authors sought to bring together diffuse, sometimes confidential, knowledge, as well as extensive photographic documentation, most of which has never been published before, to illustrate the creation and wearing of these insignia. This exceptional work, essential for collectors and researchers interested in the saga of the French paratroopers, presents numerous sets of nominative items, including insignia, diplomas, and certificates of commission, which help to authenticate, date, and locate the manufacture of certain pieces.
