FRENCH Language Book: This book offers a definitive study of the engagements involving the 8th Armoured Brigade and the 49th Infantry Division ("Polar Bears") between June 10 and July 1, 1944, along the Audrieu–Fontenay-le-Pesnel–Rauray axis. Drawing on over 12 years of research—and utilizing war diaries, numerous documents, and previously unpublished first-hand accounts—the author has reconstructed a meticulous day-by-day (and at times hour-by-hour) chronology of the fighting, particularly during Operations "Dauntless" and "Martlet." The British breakthrough achieved on June 25, 1944, near Fontenay-le-Pesnel—at the seam between the Panzer-Lehr-Division and the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend secured the right flank, paving the way for the decisive "Epsom" breakthrough. For several days, the Germans made desperate attempts to prevent the collapse of this sector of the front by committing fresh units to the Rauray and Cheux areas (including the 2nd Panzer Division, s.SS-Pz.Abt. 101, Kampfgruppe Weidinger, and the 9th SS Panzer Division "Hohenstaufen"), yet they never succeeded; the Tessel-Rauray salient was never eliminated. Backed by evidence, the author draws on his extensive expertise to set the historical record straight regarding facts that had long been misrepresented—such as the alleged absence of Tiger heavy tanks from the schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung* 101 in Fontenay-le-Pesnel. This 448-page volume—featuring a wealth of previously unpublished documents and exceptional imagery, including over 1,000 precisely captioned photographs (portraits, period maps, and battlefield relics), the vast majority of which have never been seen before—serves as an indispensable resource for understanding the Battle of Normandy.
