FRENCH LANGUAGE TITLE. On September 1, 1939, the 3.7cm anti-tank gun in service in the Heer weighed less than 450 kg and its projectiles pierced 30 mm of armour at 500 meters. In the spring of 1940, this piece showed its limits against the tanks of the French Army. From then on, a race began, which, each year, saw the commissioning of a new calibre, 5cm in 1941, 7.5cm in 1942, 8.8cm in 1943, with, of course, a constant increase in performance, but also an incessant increase in weight. In 1944, the project's ten tons of a 12.8cm piece challenged the raison d'¬être of the towed anti-tank gun. Who says towed parts, implies the existence of a large fleet of dedicated vehicles, especially when a specialized body has been set up, that of the Panzerj¬äger , supposed to be motorized. However, even before entering the war, the automobile fleet of the German Army was already largely heterogeneous. Its first successes, in the West and in the East, offered it a happy and large support, both in capture tractors and captured anti-tank guns, while complicating the management of ammunition and spare supplies.
